How To
How to get an honor star on Hollywood Walk of Fame
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce founded the Hollywood Walk of Fame, HWOF (Hollywood Walk of Fame) in 1960. The HWOF can be found at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, California. It is made up of 2,711 stars that are embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star represents someone who made motion pictures, television or radio, as well as music and other aspects of popular culture. There are currently 1,922 living persons listed on the HWOF.
To become a member of HWOF you will need to submit your name at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This submits your name then to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you have been approved, you will be given a certificate that shows your name and details, including date of birth, place of residence, occupation, and category. A bronze plaque with the name of your choice is included. This plaque is attached directly to the concrete base, in front of designated stars.
You can apply for a star if a current member of the HWOF nominated you or if you made significant contributions to movies, television, radio, theatre, music, or something else considered part of "popular culture." A committee evaluates the nominations and decides whether to approve them. If they do, they will send a letter explaining their decision to the applicant at his/her home address. If the person accepts the nomination, he/she receives a second letter confirming acceptance. The applicant then pays $25 to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which forwards the money to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.
The department issues the Hollywood Chamber of commerce a check, payable to it. The check is sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays any artist or organization that submitted an application. The fee is then paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce at $12.50. The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs receives the remaining half.
Once the artist receives his/her star he/she will be eligible to be inducted into the HWOF. You must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce the balance due to be included on the HWOF. The amount due depends upon how many years ago your first nomination was. You would owe $15,000. If you were first Nominated in 1990, for example. For example, if your first nomination was in 1990, you would owe $15,000. However, if it had been in 1980, you would owe 10,000.
If you want to remove yourself from the HWOF, you need to contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and pay off the remainder of your debt. They will remove your name from this list.
How old is one to be eligible for a HWOF Star?
Nominations are open to anyone over 18 years of age. To receive a coveted star, one must be at least 18 years old. A star can be renominated after 10 years.
What happens if I die before my star gets put up?
A family member can nominate your name for a star. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce can place a memorial marker next to the star, if there aren't any living relatives.
Why can't people choose to use a different street than having stars all over the place?
The HWOF doesn't intend to be historical monument. It is intended to honor all those who have made film history possible.
What happened the star thefts? The thieves took around 1,200 stars. Each star is between 250-300 lbs. If you add all of the weight together, it comes to approximately 4 tons of stars!
