Henry VIII used all his powers against Catholic Church during the reign of his monarchy to further his goals. The Laws of Wales Acts resulted in a legal union between England and Wales, and the Crown of Ireland Act made Henry the first English monarch to rule over Ireland. Henry became the first English monarch crowned King in Ireland by virtue of the Act. Ireland was a papal property before this Act. Henry VIII's dream of a united Ireland was impossible without changes to Parliament. This reorganized Parliament's role and set the stage for a clash between the Crown and Parliament, which lasted until the English Civil War.
Oliver Cromwell's attempt at returning England to Roman Catholicism
The Reformation led to the re-establishment of the Church of England, and in 1649 Oliver Cromwell signed King Charles I's death warrant. He was a member of The Rump Parliament (1649-53) which ruled the short-lived Commonwealth of England. He was appointed in 1650 to lead the English army against the Irish Confederate. The English forces defeated Ireland's army, and occupied Ireland. There they passed the Penal Laws. The English forces also waged a war against the Scottish army in 1650 and 1651.
