FAQ
Why is it called Hollywood?
D.W. Griffith created the first movie industry in California in 1887. It was named for its Los Angeles location, also known as Hollywood at that time.
Because it was such a fascinating place, people kept coming back for more. People would come from all over just to see what was happening there.
Hollywood is still a big part of our culture. Movies, television shows and music videos are all part of our culture. These are all known as Hollywood.
Why aren't more filmmakers using crowdfunding sites like Indiegogo and Kickstarter?
Crowdfunding websites are great because you can reach potential investors directly.
However, most filmmakers do not believe they are qualified to request money. They feel they need someone else who can vouch for them.
And since they haven't proven themselves yet, they don't think anyone should invest in them.
Instead, they spend months working on their project, hoping someone will eventually notice.
Then, when they launch the campaign, they realize how poorly prepared they were.
So instead of getting thousands of dollars, they end up with just a handful of donations.
What is the cost of distributing a feature-length film?
A typical distribution deal costs between $100,000-$150,000.
The average cost per theater is around $10,000.
The average cost per screen is around $5,000.
It means that, if you have 100 screens your distribution fees would be $500,000.
Your distribution fees would be $50,000 if you had ten screens.
Hollywood's fame?
The simple answer was yes. It became famous because they were willing to take risks and do something different. They were able to make films that would be remembered for many years.
And they also had the courage to experiment with new ideas.
How much does Hollywood make a year?
Producing a movie can cost around $100 million. If you produced ten movies per year for a decade you would have enough money to purchase a small country.
You would have your own island, including an airport, a power station, a bank and a post office.
If that doesn’t sound like fun, you must be insane.
Are foreign sales more lucrative than domestic ones for Hollywood?
Yes, but only slightly. Foreign revenues made up about 17% of total revenue in 2017. Domestic revenues accounted for 83%.
Over half of the world’s population is found in overseas markets.
This means that many people, even those who don't watch movies at home, will still want to see yours.
Can I form my own distribution business?
No. You cannot legally operate a distribution company without being a distributor.
You must follow certain rules, even though you are not distributing films of other people.
For instance, it is not possible to charge different prices for different theaters. You cannot also charge different fees to customers.
Also, you can't offer your services to any other company.

How To
How to get a Hollywood Walk of Fame star
In 1960, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce created the Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF). The HWOF, located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard Los Angeles, California. It is composed of 2,711 stars embedded into sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents an individual who contributed to popular culture, such as television, radio or theater. There are currently 1,922 living persons listed on the HWOF.
To become a HWOF member, you need to submit a name to Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. They then submit your details to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you have been approved, you will be given a certificate that shows your name and details, including date of birth, place of residence, occupation, and category. A bronze plaque with your personalization is also provided. This plaque is attached on a concrete base at the star.
A current HWOF member can nominate you for a star or if you have made significant contributions in movies, television or radio. A committee reviews the nominations and determines whether they should be approved. If they do, they send a letter to the applicant's home address explaining their decision. The person who accepts the nomination will receive a second confirmation letter. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce charges $25, and then the money is sent to the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Los Angles.
The department issues a check payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which sends the check to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the application submitted by the artist or organization. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce receives half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs gets the rest.
Once the artist has received his/her star, he/she becomes eligible to be included in the HWOF. You must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce the balance due to be included on the HWOF. The amount due will vary depending on how long ago you were nominated. For example, if you were first nominated in 1990, you would owe $15,000. You'd owe $10,000 if you were previously nominated in 1990.
If you want to remove yourself from the HWOF, you need to contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and pay off the remainder of your debt. They will remove your name permanently from the HWOF list.
What age is required to become a HWOF star?
Nominations are open to anyone over 18 years of age. A person must be present at the time of receiving a star. After receiving a Star, one can still be Nominated for another star after ten Years.
What happens if I die before my star gets put up?
You can be nominated by your family members to receive a star. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce can place a memorial marker next to the star, if there aren't any living relatives.
Why not use a new street, instead of staring at everyone?
The HWOF does not intend to be a historical monument. It is intended to honor all those who have made film history possible.
What happened to the stolen stars? The thieves took around 1,200 stars. Each star is between 250-300 lbs. If you add all of the weight together, it comes to approximately 4 tons of stars!
