FAQ

What do actors earn?

An actor's pay can vary from $1,000,000 per movie to below $100,000 for independent films. The typical actor earns around $10,000 to $20,000 per movie. Many actors get no pay. It all depends on their success. Some actors make millions while others struggle to find work.

Is Hollywood making more from international sales than domestic?

Yes, but it is only slightly. 2017 foreign revenue accounted for approximately 17%. Domestic revenues accounted for 83%.

In fact, more than half the world's people live in overseas markets.

This means that people who may never have the chance to see a movie at home might still be curious about your movie.

What's the difference between a manufacturer and a distributor?

A producer creates the movie. The movie is distributed by a distributor. Producors have the option to sell movies directly to distributors or theaters. Distributors buy movies from producers. They then sell them to theaters and cable channels or streaming services.

Distributors must negotiate with theater owners where their movies will be shown. This means that some theaters might charge more money for a certain movie than others. Distributors should be able to distribute your movie to as many theaters as possible.

Why don't more filmmakers use crowdfunding websites like Indiegogo or Kickstarter?

Crowdfunding platforms are fantastic because they allow you direct contact with potential investors.

But most filmmakers don't think they're qualified to ask for money. They believe they need another person to verify their claims.

They don't believe anyone should invest in them, as they have not proven their worth yet.

Instead, they spend months working on their project, hoping someone will eventually notice.

Then, once they finally launch their campaign, they realize they didn't prepare properly.

They end up with only a few donations, instead of thousands of dollars.

What is the average number of movies Hollywood makes in a year?

Hollywood studios produce about 3,000 films each year. Three thousand!

Hollywood spends billions on advertising for these films. They spend millions producing them. They spend millions to promote them. But how many end up actually getting seen in the theaters, do you think?

The answer is probably around 200-300. So what happens to all those other 2,700+ films? Well, most are either made as direct-to-video releases, or they just sit there gathering dust in storage vaults.

But not all of them are destined to go unseen. Some of them were selected for distribution via Netflix Prime, Amazon Prime and Hulu Plus, iTunes or Google Play.

So why don't we see more of them? They are not being released in theaters. They are too expensive for production.

They'd also be cheaper to produce and released in theaters.

I can help. I can help you to find the best way to get your film into theaters.

I'll show how to maximize your return-on-investment (ROI) as well as increase your chances for seeing your movie in theatres.

Let's face it, we all know...

It can be hard to get your film into the theaters. It is a complex, long-winded and complicated process that requires a lot of legalities.

You may end up spending a lot of money before you get started.

The time frame in which your film can be distributed is also very limited.

There simply isn't enough time between when a film is finished, and its theatrical run begins.

It is called Hollywood.

D.W. Griffith founded the first film industry in California in 1887. It was named after its location in Los Angeles, which at the time was known as "Hollywood."

Because it was such a fascinating place, people kept coming back for more. People would travel all the way from other countries to see what was happening.

Hollywood is still a big part of our culture. We have movies, television shows, music videos, commercials, etc. We call them all "Hollywood."

Statistics

  • New York Times article stated that only 15% of the top films in 2013 had women in lead acting roles. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • The author of the study noted that "The percentage of female speaking roles has not increased much since the 1940s when they hovered around 25 percent to 28 percent." (en.wikipedia.org)
  • The percentage of black female characters went from 16 percent in 2017 to 21 percent in 2018. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • This reflected no change from 2011 and only a 1% increase from 1998."[116]"9% of all directors. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • If we translate this to a percentage, we get 28%, so let's be generous and say that ‘Hollywood studios' release about ⅓ of the movies released in the U.S. and Canada each year. (glitteratilobotomy.com)

How To

How to get a Hollywood Walk of Fame star

In 1960, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce created the Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF). The HWOF can be found at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, California. It's made up of 2,711 stars, which are embedded in the sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents a person who has contributed to television, radio, theatre, music, motion pictures, or any other aspect of popular culture. The HWOF currently lists 1,922 people.

To become a member of HWOF you will need to submit your name at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This submits your name then to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, a certificate will be sent to you stating that you are eligible. This includes your name as well as date of birth and the city where you live. A bronze plaque with your name inscribed on it is also included. This plaque is attached to a concrete base located in front of the designated Star.

If a member of the HWOF has nominated you, or if your contributions are significant to films, television, radio or theatre, or any other part of popular culture, you can apply for a Star. A committee evaluates all nominations and then decides whether to approve them. If they do, they send a letter to the applicant's home address explaining their decision. If the person accepts, they will be sent a second letter to confirm their acceptance. The applicant then pays $25 to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which forwards the money to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues a cheque payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce. It then sends the check the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the applicant or organization. The artist or organization then pays the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce half the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs pays the remainder.

Once the artist has received his/her star, he/she becomes eligible to be included in the HWOF. To be eligible to list on the HWOF you will need to pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce all outstanding balance. The amount due will depend on when you were first nominated. If you were first honoured in 1990, then you would owe $15,000. If you were nominated for the first time in 1990, you would owe $15,000.

To remove yourself from HWOF, contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. They will help you pay the remaining debt. They will take care of removing your name from the list permanently.

How old does one have to get a star on the HWOF?

To be nominated, one must be at least 18 years. To receive a star, one must be alive at that time. After receiving a star, one may still be nominated again after ten years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

A family member can nominate your name for a star. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place an honorary marker in front of the star if there are no living relatives.

Why don't people just use a different street instead of having stars all over the place?

The HWOF was not created to be a historical landmark. It is meant as a memorial to all who contributed to the history of film.

What happened with the stars that were stolen? The thieves stole around 1,200 stars. Each star weighs between 250 and 300 lbs. This makes it approximately 4 tons!
