FAQ
Are foreign sales more lucrative than domestic ones for Hollywood?
Yes, but only slightly. In 2017, foreign revenues accounted for about 17% of total revenue. Domestic revenues accounted for 83%.
Over half of the world's population is actually located in overseas markets.
This means many people who might never watch a movie at home will still want to see yours.
How many movies makes Hollywood each year?
Hollywood studios produce around 3,000 films per year. That's right, three thousand!
Hollywood spends billions to advertise for these movies. They spend millions creating them. They spend millions to promote them. However, how many actually make it to the theaters?
It's probably between 200-300. So what happens to all those other 2,700+ films? Most of them are either released direct-to-video or just sit in storage.
They are not all destined to be overlooked. Some of these have been selected to be distributed via Netflix, Amazon Prime or Hulu Plus.
We should see more of them. They are not being released in theaters. Because they're too expensive to produce.
And if they were cheaper to produce, they'd be released into theaters.
This is where I come in. I can help guide you in the best way possible to put your movie in theaters.
I'll show how to maximize your return-on-investment (ROI) as well as increase your chances for seeing your movie in theatres.
We have to face it...
Getting your film into theaters can be quite difficult. The process can be complex and lengthy.
You may end up spending a lot of money before you get started.
You have a very short window in which to distribute your film.
There isn't enough time in between the time a movie is finished and when its theatrical run starts.
What is the difference of a producer and distributor?
The movie is made by a producer. The movie is distributed via a distributor. Distributors, theaters and other companies, such as Netflix, can be sold directly by producers. Distributors purchase movies directly from producers. They then sell them to theaters and cable channels or streaming services.
Distributors must negotiate with theater owners where their movies will be shown. This could mean that certain theaters may charge more for a particular movie than others. You should select a distributor that has multiple theaters if you want your movie seen as much as possible.
Can I form my own distribution business?
No. You cannot legally operate a distribution company without being a distributor.
Even though you may not be distributing other people's films, you still have to follow certain rules.
You cannot, for instance, charge different prices at different theaters. And you can't charge different fees to different customers.
Your services cannot be sold to any company.
Why are so few independent films ever distributed?
Most indie filmmakers assume that their films will get picked up by distributors.
They are certain distributors will take their films, as they know that the public will love them.
But this is rare. Distributors often use independent filmmakers.
They employ tactics like delaying a movie's release until after awards season has ended.
They may delay the release of a low budget film until after summer blockbuster season begins.
Distributors will also attempt to keep movies away from viewers until they have spent hundreds of dollars on popcorn, tickets, or candy.
After all, they don't want to lose out on those profits.
How much does it cost for a feature movie to be distributed?
A distribution deal typically costs between $100,000 and $150,000.
Theaters cost an average of $10,000.
Screens are typically around $5,000 in cost.
The distribution fee is approximately $500,000. If you have 100 screens then that would mean your cost to distribute the screen(s) is around $500,000.
Distribution fees are $50,000 for 10 screens.
How many theaters do I need to make back my investment?
It depends on how much time you intend to keep your theatrical release running.
You only need one theater if your film will be shown for less than 2 weeks.
If your film is going to be screened for more then two weeks, you will need two theaters.
